This RUclips channel, the only one of its kind on the internet, is dedicated to a serious, scholarly, and yet approachable investigation of Indian history, culture, politics, and religion, and more broadly what may be called the inheritance of Indian civilization. However, there are also two courses on contemporary world history, covering the period from the Industrial Revolution to the present, as well as a course on the global Indian diaspora. All the lectures are neatly organized into playlists. For more advanced students and scholars, there is even a course (again, organized as a playlist) on the Politics of Knowledge in Colonial India, offered to PhD students and junior faculty as an intensive course in India some years ago, just as for those millions who love mainstream Indian cinema, there is a course on "Bollywood and Nationalism". Viewers are advised that the greater majority of the lectures were originally delivered as undergraduate courses at UCLA.
The Exercise of Freedom: A Dalit Anthology
The Exercise of Freedom is one of the shorter but better anthologies of Dalit writing. The book is published by Navayana, Delhi, and edited by Susie Tharu and K. Satyanarayana. I discuss in particular two works, one an excerpt by Kumud Pawde called "the Story of My Sanskrit", and a short story by Anil Navaria, "The New Custom".

Shakespeare on Robben Island: Ashwin Desai on Politics, Pedagogy, and Literature in the Prison
Просмотров 51914 дней назад
Robben Island was, in the apartheid period of South African history (1949-1992), a notorious maximum security prison. Histories of prisons are generally written around punishment, deterrence, retribution, cruelty, solitary confinement, and social death and, of course, prison revolts and jail breaks. This very fine book, a work of immense creativity quite characteristic of the work of the sociol...
Meena Kandasamy and the Women Guerrillas of the LTTE
Просмотров 61121 день назад
Meena Kandasamy's short book is a work in several genres: non-fiction writing and reportage, memoir, poetry, and polemics. It explores the lives of three Tamil women and the politics of femininity, the contrasting images of Tamilian women reduced to domesticity and the Tamil Tiger women of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eeelam. It is a passionately and powerfully written work with some interest...
The Topography and Odyssey of Hunger: On Hamsun's 1920 Novel
Просмотров 37321 день назад
Knut Hamsun, though a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920, is now a largely forgotten figure perhaps owing to his support, in the 1930s and 1940s, of Hitler and his adulation for the Nazis. But Hunger is an extraordinary novel, the first of its kind a novel without a plot, without "action", without a narrative as such, and certainly without any message. It is a novel of interiority...
Police Violence and Authoritarianism: Crushing the Palestine Solidarity Movement at UCLA
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.2 месяца назад
This video, done on the spur of the movement some hours ago, describes briefly the violence deployed by the police at the orders of UCLA Chancellor Block in clearing the Palestine Solidarity Encampment in the very early hours of May 2. 200 protestors, mainly students, were arrested. It describes the criminal dereliction of duty on the part of Chancellor Block and the incitement to hatred agains...
Subaltern Studies in the Anthropocene Age
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Subaltern Studies 2.0, edited by Milinda Banerjee and Jelle J. P. Wouters (Prickly Paradigm Press, Chicago, 2022) may be construed with some reason as an attempt to take the now defunct Sublaltern Studies project into the new, relatively uncharted territory that we know by the name of the Anthropocene. The Anthropocene is our present age, the first age when humans are no longer just biological ...
A Muslim-Free India: Saeed Naqvi's The Muslim Vanishes & the Hindutva Dream
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Saeed Naqvi, a veteran Indian journalist, imagines an India that is Musulman-mukt, or Muslim-free, in this play called The Muslim Vanishes. It was published in India last year to considerable accolades and is intriguing enough. The author is obviously animated by concerns about the Muslim in present-day India, and uses the play as an occasion to think about the course of Indian history since th...
Socrates and Confucius at the Agora, Athens: An Encounter
Просмотров 6417 месяцев назад
This very short video, following on the heels of my earlier video on Socrates in the Agora, is also shot in the Agora and has been inspired by a sculptural work on Socrates and Confucius by the Chinese artist Wu Weishan. These very short set of remarks consider briefly the notion of the lawgiver, and I suggest that it is figure of "the lawgiver" that enabled the one artist to call to mind Socra...
Socrates in the Agora and the Beginnings of Western Democracy
Просмотров 4427 месяцев назад
This short video was recorded by me in Athens on the evening of Wednesday, Dec 13 on my visit to the Agora (also known as the Classical or Ancient Agora to distinguish it, in part, from the Roman Agora). The word 'Agora' means an 'open place for assembly'; it also became known as the marketplace. The agora is where Athenian or Western democracy is said to have been born. Here I offer a few quic...
The RSS: The Real Anti-National Organization in India

This is a talk on Devanura Mahadeva's RSS: The Long and Short of It, translated by S. R. Ramakrishna, with an introduction by Ram Guha and afterword by Yogendra Yadav (Delhi: Westland, 2022). Though a short tract, quite likely not more than 10,000-15,000 words, it packs a punch. Its insights are for the most part not new to students of Indian history, Hindu nationalism, and the history and ideo...
The Dadis of Shaheen Bagh: An Indian Muslim Women's Movement and the Future of Satyagraha

This lecture delivered on behalf of a group known as the Indian Diaspora Washington DC Metro Group. An essay that I had just published before giving this lecture in Spring 2023 encapsulates nearly all the arguments presented in this lecture, though of course in this lecture I take the luxury of meandering about a bit and making various references informally that are not to be found in the paper...
Some Thoughts on the British Colonization of India - Lecture at Kedleston Hall, 21 June 2023
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.7 месяцев назад
This lecture was delivered by me on 21 June 2023 in the grand rotunda at Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire, England. Kedleston Hall is a property managed by the National Trust; it is the ancestral estate of the Curzon family. George Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Marquess of Kedleston, was the Viceroy of India (1898-1905) and subsequently the Foreign Secretary in the British Government (1919-1924). He is oft...
Two American Iconoclasts: Henry D. Thoreau and His Essay on the Abolitionist John Brown
Просмотров 5179 месяцев назад
John Brown, the famous and controversial American abolitionist who led the ill-fated raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry on 17 October 1859 in the hope that he might encourage slaves to join him in a rebellion, was executed on 2 December 1859. On October 31, Henry David Thoreau, the author of Walden as well as an essay on the duty of civil disobedience, delivered a "plea for Captain Joh...
Ranajit Guha and the Grammar of Peasant Insurgency:
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.9 месяцев назад
This talk is on a scholarly and difficult, if invigorating, book by Ranajit Guha entitled Elementary Aspects of Peasant Insurgency in Colonial India (Delhi: Oxford University Press, 1983). It is a brilliant study of peasant rebellions, drawing upon work in semiotics, Marxism, neo-Marxism, structuralism, Indian grammar and Sanskrit texts, and much more to suggest how we might work with a grammar...
Plunder and Loot during the Holocaust: A Few Thoughts on Jan Gross's Golden Harvest
Просмотров 4549 месяцев назад
Jan Tomasz Gross is a Polish historian best known for his book, Neighbors, which created a storm in Poland. In the present book, Golden Harvest: Events at the Periphery of the Holocaust, he begins with a photograph of some 20-30 peasants or grave diggers standing in a row; placed before them is a smaller row of skulls and crossbones. It is the argument of the book that the forcible, indeed viol...

Nice sir ❤️
In many ways Ireland was the original laboratory where these ad hoc primitive instincts were rationalised into formulaic policy before being rolled out into modern g£obali$ation uber a££€$. The Irish, being of the same pigmentation, had to be designated the 'mere Irish' in order to pin them to the imperial page. The Ashkenazi tribal-sectarian project in Fort Zion is the culmination of the internalisation of these homicidal policies by a self-selected group of the lowered orders of this falsified heirarchy of merit. By stealing the cloak of the persecuted world Jew the zealots of this sect have beome the U$€fu£ idiots of their own tormentors and displaced their drive for humanity into the common bestiality on full display in Palestine against an innocent population.
A mind blowing lecture series... All Indians interested in history must watch .... N grasp millions of things !!
The Overseas Chinese were often the wrong victims of Anti China sentiments. VS Naipaul mentioned it in his book 'Among the Believers'.
Blessed to have access to his video lectures free of cost.
been loving these book reviews recently, keep it up!!
To be a constructive critic doesn't require denigrating other's views without contextualizing their entire writings. Gandhi is treated by many without reading him studiously...Thank you Prof.Lal for a balanced review.
Before 10 day i am watching this for graduation exam 😂
I'm intrigued. Definitely gonna check this one out. Thank you, Prof. Lal :)
It seems like reading Shakespeare in jail is common for political prisoners. Malaysia's current PM Anwar Ibrahim also said he read a volume of Shakespeare 4 times in jail during early 2000s
Great video, just wanna add that while I agree we should be able to enjoy the works of people with disgusting political views, I do think the conversation is much more difficult when we consider authors etc. Who are alive versus dead, for someone like Hamsun, we arent financially supporting a nazi when we buy his books anymore. However if he were alive I think it would be completely justified to refuse to buy his books if he held the beliefs he did (not saying you have to abstain from buying them, but a strong case for not buying them could be made)
Sir, please have a lecture on liberalism, neo liberalism, imperialism, and all these modern theories.।
This is the most beautiful thing I found this week.
Sir please one video make Arundhati Roy
Dhanyawaad sir ji aap ka ❤
One with a sense of history can be a good critic of literature and that qualifies Prof.Lal to be doing so deftly...Enjoyed thoroughly. Thank you.
Sir ...i have been following you since 2016 and did listen to your lectures especially on british india during my undergrad which really helped me...recently i qualified for research fellowships in history and wanna pursue phd..how can i get your guidance...i ll feel very blessed sir.
thank you a lot
Your lectures are kind of a meditation ❤
Sir please make a vedio on how to read a book and how to be a good reader And recommend us some best philosophical books
Sir request to u that please upload video on ur library

Sir I m a student of history... completed my master's from University of Allahabad... just wanted to do research in Mediaeval period of India...can you please help me..
Thank you so much. I love you prof
It's surprising that even in the modern world , in the world of equality they respect this bloodthirsty man.
Kudos for your brilliant analysis
Your lecture is very good, I like to read history so your lectures are very useful for me.❤
Sir ❤
Vedas mention MIGHTY Saraswati river of 4000 BCE and not dried river of 2000 BCE thus the Vedas were never written BEYOND 2000 BCE ( and never by MYTHICAL ARYANS of 1500 BCE)
Horse carts and horse riders of India around 5000 BCE are well painted in BHIM BETKA caves of BHOPAL MADHYA PRADESH ( not Aryan invasion or migration)
Sorry Water Buffaloes were found only in India and NEVER in Caspian Sea or Iceland Peepal Tree is found only in India and Mayanmar ( not in Caspian Sea region)
Dancing girl is standing in VICTORY POSE ( see later King Chandergupt Maurya and Ashoka wives standing in similar VICTORY & mythical dancing pose)
The temple related with GREAT WATER BATH is what Britishers call mythically as STUPA ( connoting a later 600 BCE or later Buddhist origin)
I recently became interested in Indian history. Is there a list of books you would recommend for an introduction to Indian history?
CORRECTION- (37:10) The Indus River empties in Arabian Sea and not Bay of Bengal.
What article is he referencing at the end of the video? it would be great if the reading materials were listed in the description of these videos. Be that as it may, it's still a treat to watch these lectures on youtube for free, maybe one day I'll sit in one of vinay lal's classrooms
Initially the author released a draft on Libgen for open access and publications help later by major, highly accessible work but haven't reached beyond reading minds. But words spread, books might be less.
Good Sir
This man is saying boiled chicken, carrots and vegetables is inferior to chicken fried and roasted in butter marination and boiled in butter filled gravy , just because it tastes better doesn’t make it inferior he need to study food nutritious study
Robert Clive is the founder of India
This guy is legendary
Whoever started those ugly rumours about Xanthippe was malicious or just stupid. I don't believe the things said about Xanthippe that were meant to smear her name and reputation. And typically one of Shakespear's particularly odious characters bought into those stories. Oh, wow, you just mentioned this as I was writing this comment. :)
Amazing
All bullshits
Sir I am confused regarding the relation of the title to the actual content of the video , In my opinion the title strongly suggests ones personal emotional feelings rather than what you could factualy talk about RSS being "Anti-National".

Thanku for sharing this dark past of our history because no one talks about it🎉❤

Thank you sir
I listened having recently reread Edward Said's comments on Hamas. I find Ghandi's ideas about the problems of this conflict instructive.
